Being the capital city and cultural center of Costa Rica, the city of San Jose has tons of fun, educational, historic, relaxed, or cultural things to do.  Whatever type of activity you are interested in, you can do it in San Jose.  All the capital and state buildings are located in the city, many of which you can tour if you call ahead for an appointment, as is the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

For those interested in history and culture, there are a number of beautifully decorated old churches, and the Pre-Colombian Gold Museum has thousands of pre-Colombian crafted artwork, statues, figurines, tombs, and more made of gold, a stunning collection altogether.  The National Theatre and Melico Salazer theatre show dance performances, symphony and orchestral works, and opera throughout the year, and also house several traditional Costa Rican coffee houses.

Great restaurants, bars, upscale shopping, clubs, galleries, and more can be found in El Pueblo, a popular and chic place to party the night away, while university students love to frequent the Calle de la Amargura, filled with lower priced bars, restaurants, shops, and clubs.  The Lankaster Botanical Gardens are a lovely place to walk and relax, taking in the amazing natural beauty of the area.

For some wild fun, check out the Parque de Diversiones de Costa Rica, the only theme park in the country, complete with a historic replica of 19th century San Jose city!  You can also take amazing day trips with any number of tour agencies (see our lobby for schedules, pamphlets and help arranging them).  San Jose has something for every traveler, whether you are interested in shopping, history, eco-tourism, fun, clubbing, visiting the jungle, and more!
